Starting the New Year with Intention: A Parents Guide

Celeste Torres

Updated: Jan 4

As we step into a brand-new year, there’s something gracious about the fresh start it offers. It’s a chance to pause, reflect, and set intentions for what truly matters. For parents, that often means reconnecting with the heart of our homes—our families and children. No matter where you’re starting from, this year can be the year you intentionally engage with your kids, embrace the Grow As You Go mindset, and help them build resilience and a lifelong love for learning.

A joyful family bonding moment as they delight in the playful chaos of learning to cook together in the kitchen.

Every Starting Point Matters

Maybe last year felt like a whirlwind. Maybe you’re carrying some guilt about missed opportunities. Or maybe you’re already on a great track but looking to deepen your connection with your kids. Wherever you are, it’s the perfect place to begin. The beauty of intentional parenting is that it’s not about being perfect—it’s about being present. Children don’t need us to have all the answers; they just need us to show up, stay consistent, and create opportunities for meaningful connection. And the good news? Each day is filled with small, everyday moments to do just that...and to encourage use even more God's mercies are new every single morning. So take heart in this process.

Consistency: The Key to Growth

Consistency is like planting a garden. You don’t see results overnight, but with time and care, you’ll watch incredible things bloom. Whether it’s a five-minute story time, a daily walk, or simply asking thoughtful questions during dinner, consistency builds trust, nurtures resilience, and teaches children the value of showing up—even when it’s hard. This year, consider creating simple, achievable routines that work for your family. Need some ideas?

  • Daily Check-Ins: Take a few minutes each day to ask your child about their favorite part of the day or something they learned. As a summer camp counselor we called these our highs. As your children get older, you can discuss the lows as well, because those are just as important.

  • Shared Goals: Work together to set fun, age-appropriate goals for the year. It could be reading a certain number of books, trying a new hobby, or learning a skill.

  • Learning in Everyday Moments: Use car rides, grocery shopping, or bedtime to weave in conversations about curiosity, learning and growth through songs and conversation.

Fostering Resilience Through Intentional Choices

Resilience is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. Life is full of challenges, and the ability to adapt, learn, and grow through them is invaluable. This year, let’s help our kids see mistakes as opportunities and setbacks as stepping stones. Here's how:

  • Model Resilience: When you face challenges, talk about them openly with your children. Share how you’re working through them, and how you feel about your very own failures and what you’ve done to overcome the setbacks in your learning process.

  • Celebrate Effort Over Perfection: Praise your child’s effort, creativity, and persistence rather than focusing on the outcome. This can be helpful in creation, while a child is painting or learning music, you can say things like, "You have been so active and responsible playing your piano everyday, I'm so proud of you," or "I see how much attention and detail you've been putting into this artwork, can you tell me a little more about it?"

  • Create a Safe Space for Mistakes: Encourage your kids to try new things, even if they might fail. Remind them that mistakes are a natural part of learning and growing.

Nurturing a Love for Learning

Learning doesn’t have to be confined to the classroom. When we approach life with curiosity and excitement, we inspire our kids to do the same. This year, let’s focus on making learning a joyful, everyday experience.

  • Be Curious Together: Explore topics your kids are interested in and ask questions alongside them. Whether it’s bugs, space, or baking, learning together strengthens your bond. If your child asks a question you don't know the answer to look it up, or promise to them that next time they visit the library you all will find a book on that subject!

  • Read, Read, Read: Books open up entire worlds of imagination and knowledge. Make reading a daily ritual, and let your kids see you enjoying books too.

  • Connect Through Play: Play is one of the most powerful ways kids learn. Whether it’s board games, outdoor adventures, or creative arts, play fosters problem-solving, collaboration, and joy.

Grow As You Go: A Mindset for the Whole Family

At Grow As You Go, we believe that parenting and learning are lifelong journeys. There’s no finish line, no perfect roadmap—just a series of steps forward, together. This year, commit to growing alongside your kids. Tune into their needs, celebrate their progress, and allow yourself grace as you navigate the journey. Here are three reminders to keep with you this year:

  1. Small Steps Matter: Even the smallest moments of connection add up. Never underestimate the power of a hug, a kind word, or a shared laugh.

  2. Mistakes Are Opportunities: Whether it’s your child’s mistake or your own, use it as a chance to model forgiveness, growth, and problem-solving.

  3. Presence Over Perfection: Your kids don’t need you to do it all—they just need you to be present and engaged.
